The origin and development of the Tarot History

Astrology, Tarot and Cabala are the skills in a tripartite contention. In which, astrology is superior in “theory”; Tarot is superior in “appearance” and Cabala is superior in “destiny”. The scholars learn the western mystery must study all of these three and then they can get into the wisdom of western mysticism.

Among these three studies, Tarot possesses artificial and mysterious characters. It can be used to divine, and it can be collected as a treasure of art. So Tarot is popular everywhere in the society. Its colorful figures also are made a far-fetched comparison with magic and mythology. There are seventy-eight cards in Tarot which are divided into Major Arcana and Minor Arcana. Each card has a number in it which can match up with Cabala. The origin of the Tarot is still widely divided by different people Yet the most familiar wording is that it is from Egypt. Some people think the Tarot would be the “Book of Thoth”, the magic and wisdom classics in ancient Egypt.

This book originally is drown on the temples and is used to convey the decree of god and solve the doubts of Pharaoh. Later, the kingdom was destroyed and the patterns (pictures) were drown on the volume and carried out by the priest. Later Gypsy spread it to Europe.

The mystery scholar Levi, in 19th century, connected Tarot and Cabala (ancient Jewish religion). He found the mapping between the Hebrew 22 letters and the Tarot cards, and found the mapping between the 22 shortcuts of Life of Tree in Cabala religious doctrines. Such saying gave great support to the people who agreed on the origin of Hebrew.

The earliest Tarot which is reserved today is the 17 cards of Major Arcana kept by the National Library in Paris, France. In 14th century, Tarot had been shifted to underground due to crucified by religion. Till 18th and 19th, through the study and pushing by Geblin and Levi, Tarot appeared with new figures to people. Papus, the follower of Geblin in the end of 19th century, improved the theory and system of Tarot greatly. He wrote the first academic work of “The Tarot of the Bohemians” and added Numberlogy to enrich the intension of Tarot. He was valued highly as the founder of modern Tarot theory and system.

There was one thing happened in 1888 that was the most important event in modern age of Tarot. The Hermetics Order of the Golden Dawn of Ross Cross was founded in London. They, again combined Tarot, astrology and Cabala to make the system of Tarot more completed. 1891, A.E. Waite joined the group. And he published Raide-Waite Tarot with Mrs Smith. In addition, Waite wrote a book of “A Pictorial Key to Tarot” to explain Tarot. Soon, the volume of circulation of this edition became the most popular and it was generally acknowledged as the international standard which was used as the textbook for the beginner.
